The 23rd FIFA World Cup, an international men's soccer competition held every four years and contested by the national teams of FIFA member countries, will take place in 2026 under the name FIFA World Cup 26[2]. The competition is scheduled for June 11–July 19, 2026. Sixteen cities from three North American nations—the United States, Canada, and Mexico—will collectively host it. This will be the first North American World Cup since 1994 and the first event to be hosted by three different countries.Argentina is the reigning champion [3][4].
Expanded from 32 teams to 48, this event will mark the first time this has happened.[5] In the final vote at the 68th FIFA Congress in Moscow, the United 2026 bid defeated the competing bid from Morocco. Since 2002, this will be the first World Cup hosted by multiple countries. Mexico will be the first nation to host or co-host the men's World Cup three times after doing so for the 1970 and 1986 competitions. This will be Canada's first time hosting or co-hosting the men's World Cup; the United States last did it in 1994. The event will also resume its customary northern summer schedule following the November and December dates of the 2022 edition in Qatar.
One team from each confederation—UEFA excluded—and one more team from the confederation of the host nations (CONCACAF) will make up the six teams competing in the play-offs. For the two FIFA World Cup slots, two of the teams will be seeded according to the World Rankings, and they will compete against the winners of two knockout games between the four unseeded nations. The four-game competition will serve as a test event for the FIFA World Cup and take place in one or more of the host nations.[49] The OFC is also guaranteed a spot in the championship tournament for the first time thanks to the ratification of slot allocation; the 2026 FIFA World Cup will mark the first competition in which all six.
All 203 eligible members were able to cast a ballot during the 68th FIFA Congress in Moscow on June 13, 2018.[33] With 134 valid votes, the United bid prevailed against the Morocco offer, which earned 65 valid votes. Cuba, Slovenia, and Spain did not cast ballots; Iran chose the "None of the bids" option.
